Teacher Spotlight – Heidi Wethered

What do you enjoy about teaching?
My favorite thing about teaching is sharing with the students my love of reading the classics.

What do you like about homeschooling?
I love homeschooling because I can really tailor my classes to the needs of the students.  I love the small class size.

What is important for students to gain in their education?
I think it’s important for students to develop a love of learning, independence in time management and taking responsibility for their learning.  I want my students to be able to think critically about what they read and learn how to analyze literature.

What subjects do you teach and what led you to teach those subjects?
I teach English.  I chose to teach English because I love to read and enjoy sharing my love of literature.  I also am a bit of a grammar geek.  I actually enjoy teaching grammar so that my students develop excellent writing skills which will prepare them for anything they chose to do in their future.

What is rewarding for you as a teacher?
I think the things I find most rewarding are when I see students who were struggling begin to grasp a concept; when I have students tell me they weren’t sure they were going to like a book we’re reading and then change their minds after reading it; and the fun class discussions we have about the books we are reading.

What do you hope your students come away with from your classes?
I hope my students come away from my classes with a greater love of reading and the ability to discern quality literature.  I also hope they will come away with the ability to write and communicate well.

How do you encourage students?
I try to encourage my students by writing notes on their tests and written assignment, looking for ways to praise their work, and changing up the types of assignments and activities.

What have you enjoyed teaching at CHESS?
I love teaching at CHESS because of the students.  They are fun, hard-working, and creative!  The parents, teachers, and administrators are also wonderful to work with.  I feel blessed to be part of the CHESS team!
